Surely you’ve said to yourself, “My Mac desktop is messy, but it could be messier.” No? Well, someone at Apple has, and built a tool into the macOS Mojave beta to disorganize everything on your desktop.
This easter egg is almost certainly a feature needed during testing, but it’s also a sign that the Apple developers are willing to have a bit of fun.
The “Clean Up” feature has been in macOS for ages, but Mojave adds Stacks. This collects the various icons into groups. Mojave’s developers have to test Stacks, and Mess Up was added to make testing easier.
This means that the Mojave Mess Up probably won’t survive all the way to the full, public release of macOS Mojave.
Just messing around with Mojave Mess Up
To use Mess Up, Control+Click, then press Option and Clean Up in the resulting pop-up window becomes Mess Up. Select it, and all the icons on the desktop will jump to random places.
Anyone who has macOS Mojave Beta 2, which just launched yesterday, should go play around with it now. If you haven’t installed the latest beta, Mess Up is the original one, too.
