The just-released Gamma retro game emulator brings original PlayStation titles to iPhone. It’s ready to bring Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7 to the device you carry around everywhere.
The app is free and supports game controllers and iPad.
GammaPlayStation emulator launches for iPhone and iPad
For many years, Apple prohibited developers from listing retro game emulators for download on the iPhone App Store. It actively took down any such that slipped through its review process. But in early April, the company updated the App Store guidelines to allow this type of software.
That soon brought the launch of Delta, an emulator for Game Boy, NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and Nintendo DS. But that’s not every type of classic console.
Gamma by ZodTTD includes support for original PlayStation games. Of course, it’s up to players to provide their own ROMs — AKA the actual game software.
It comes with portrait and landscape skins for its virtual, on-screen controls. Or the external wireless game controllers supported by iOS and iPadOS are also an option.
The app promises to allow users to save their game progress at any time, and resume again from that exact point. Backups can go on cloud-storage services.
Get it for free … sort of
The Gamma PlayStation emulator by ZodTTD is available now on the App Store. It’s compatible with both iPhone and iPad.
It’s free, but with advertising. The software tracks the user’s physical location and asks to track the user online, too.
That makes it different from Delta, which is completely free to use.
