Today’s M3 MacBook Air setup features a retro-cool speaker unlike most you’ll see in workstations. When people look beyond the laptop for sound, the usual answer is bookshelf speakers. But the doctor who runs this MacBook Air and iPad Pro setup likes an unusual choice — an Edifier desktop speaker called the MP230.

Edifier desktop speaker turns M3 MacBook Air setup retro-cool
Redditor KozukiYamatoTakeru (“Takeru”) showcased the warm and inviting setup in a post entitled, “A warm and cozy setup after working all day in a hospital.” They run an M3 MacBook Pro that we wrote about last week.
“I specifically made sure that the theme of my setup would be warm since we all know a hospital is usually filled with bright white lights,” Takeru wrote, pointing out the workstation’s black-and-wood-themed colors and patterns. “Physicians usually read a lot of research papers and books after work so that’s basically the use of this whole thing.”
And the setup’s M3 MacBook Air, sitting on a vertical stand and driving a 4K external display, packs more power than Takeru actually needs for his tasks (mostly reading). And he turned elsewhere for his setup’s audio, too. The laptop has four decent speakers in it, but Takeru opts for a retro-styled wireless stereo desktop speaker we’ve never seen in a setup before.
“Speaker is the Edifier MP230,” Takeru noted. “Not the best but I love the ‘retro’ look of it and gets the job done.”
Edifier MP230 Portable Bluetooth Speaker
Known for producing high-quality audio products at moderate prices for the past couple of decades, Edifier sometimes likes to have fun with designs. Takeru’s MP230 brings a retro design that the company echoes in the R32 speaker, a larger, more recent release that I plan to review. Both look like grandpa’s devices, though in his day nothing as small as the stereo MP230 would have existed. Both boxes feature buttons that look like they came off the radio of a 1957 Chevy.
And the MP230 costs just $99. The larger and more-powerful R32 goes for $199.99.
The litte MP230 pumps out 20 watts of sound (more than a MacBook Air) over 9 hours of playtime. Here are more details about it:
- Multiple connections: Bluetooth, USB Soundcard, AUX, micro-SD
- Easy operation by manual, piano-like key buttons.
- Dual full-range drivers and rear passive radiators produce rich bass.
- Multiple audio inputs allow you to connect your devices.
