Google Chrome uses artificial intelligence in a new experimental tool that makes it easier to start writing or improve something already written online. “Help me write” can punch up the content of any text field in the browser.
It’s coming to Mac and Windows, and is just the latest AI addition to Chrome.
‘Help me write’ in Chrome is an AI assistant
One of the promises of generative AI is helping us communicate. Thanks to the power of large-language models, AI systems can suggest text for a wide range of uses, from resumes to love notes.
Google used its Gemini LLM to add “Help me write” to the Chrome browser. The software developer describes it as “an experimental and creative writing aid that uses Generative AI to help you write more easily and effectively across the web.”
Google suggests using it for creating online reviews. “If you’re writing a review for a pair of running shoes, Chrome will pull out key features from the product page that support your recommendation,” said the developer.
Other suggested uses are listings for items being sold online, requests for technical support, or dealing with web-based help desks in general. That said, Google warns against giving your “name, phone, address, social security number, or credit card information to ‘Help me write.'”
How to get started

To use the new tool, users go to a webpage with the content they want to write about and activate “Help me write” in an open text box. They then enter a prompt. “The prompt can be a phrase, question, instruction, or sentence that helps you get started writing,” notes Google.
Try it in the new Chrome version
“Help me write” debuts in Chrome M122, which is scheduled to launch this week. It’s for both Mac and Windows, but initially is available only in the U.S in English. The tool is not in the iPhone/iPad version.
It requires activating the experimental AI features of the Chrome browser.
If this sounds familiar, the Spark email app just added its own generative AI writing tool.
