Apple introduced on Tuesday four patches for a range of devices to deal with bugs. iOS 18.3.2, macOS 15.3.2, iPadOS 18.3.2 and visionOS 2.3.2 are all ready to download.
In addition to a bug fix related to streaming content, the patches also include a fix for a potentially serious security issue.
iOS 18.3.2, iPadOS 18.3.2 fix streaming bug
Apple frequently releases large and small updates for its many operating systems. The big updates come with new features. The small ones are really just patches to fix small problems.
The latter description fits the most recent updates. As the descriptions for iOS 18.3.2 and iPadOS 18.3.2 both say, “This update provides important bug fixes and security updates, and addresses an issue that may prevent playback of some streaming content.”
Patches close a security hole, too
The release notes for macOS 15.3.2 say, “This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users.
Apple says that security update relates to the WebKit rendering engine, in which “maliciously crafted web content may be able to break out of Web Content sandbox,” according to Apple.
“Vulnerabilities in WebKit should be patched quickly, as it is the framework that powers Safari and renders other web-based content,” says Adam Boynton, an Apple security expert and Senior Security Specialist, EMEIA at Jamf. “In this particular flaw, attackers were able to use maliciously crafted web content to escape the iOS Web Content sandbox. Breaking out of a sandbox allows an attacker to access data in other parts of the operating system.”
And the now-patched security hole is serious because the description comes with the warning, “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.”
The same security flaw is fixed in the latest software updates for iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro.
How to install iOS 18.3.2, macOS Sequoia 15.3.2 and more
iPhone and iPad users can install iOS 18.3.2 and iPadOS 18.3.2 directly by opening the Settings app and going to General > Software Update. Alternatively, update your devices by connecting them to a Mac (or to a PC running iTunes).
To download the macOS Sequoia update, go to Apple menu > About This Mac. Then click Software Update. Alternatively, install the new version from the App Store. (Note: At the time of this writing, Apple had not yet updated the version of macOS in the App Store. But it should happen soon.)
