Following a price hike in the US earlier this month, Spotify has unveiled a cheaper streaming music plan for its users. The new “Basic” streaming tier costs $10.99/month, $1 cheaper than the Premium plan.
Spotify charged the same price for its Premium plan before increasing it in early June. That was the company’s second price hike in less than a year.
Subscribe to Spotify without audiobooks access to save money
With a starting price of $10.99/month, a Spotify subscription once again costs the same as Apple Music. But unlike the latter, Spotify misses out on Lossless music streaming, putting it at a disadvantage.
The new Spotify Basic plan includes all the perks and goodies of the Premium tier minus audiobooks subscription and costs $1 less than it. The latter includes 15 hours of audiobook access every month. But if you don’t listen to audiobooks, you can downgrade to the Basic plan and save money.
“We’re now offering even more options for eligible U.S. subscribers,” says Spotify in its announcement. For now, the cheaper Spotify Basic plan is only available in the US.
Spotify has not launched cheaper tiers of its other plans without audiobook access. So, the Premium Duo and Premium Family tiers cost $16.99 and $19.99 monthly, respectively. These plans got a price hike of $2 and $3 in early June.
Apple Music Family plan is cheaper than Spotify
While individual Spotify and Apple Music plans cost the same again, the latter offers a cheaper Family plan. Apple charges $16.99 per month for the family plan, which allows you to add up to five other members. In comparison, Spotify’s Family plan costs $19.99 monthly, making it $3 more expensive than its primary rival.
On the flip side, Spotify has a free, ad-supported tier, which Apple Music misses out on.
