2023 iMac Review: Is M3 Chip Worth the Upgrade

The iMac obviously never got the M2. It is finally being brought up to the M3

So let's compare it to the 2021 model really quick. The new iMac has an 8-core CPU and up to 10-core GPU, up to 24 gigabytes of memory

The old one, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, only 16 gigabytes of memory

Both come up to 2 terabytes of storage. With the new one, you get the hardware-accelerated ray tracing, the ProRes encode and decode engine, and the AV1 decode

And all the fun new GPU stuff that we got before on all the other M3 chips

Apple says that Safari is up to 30% faster. Productivity apps like Microsoft Excel are up to 30% faster

Faster game loading times, up to 50% higher frame rates. Twice as fast image processing in Photoshop and Vita production in Final Cut Pro

So this is a significant performance. The iMac was never a performance demon

But if the iMac is all you can get, it's just one thing you can buy with a computer and the display built into it

If that's all you want, if you want a really simple setup, a lot of businesses use these

Apple always shows in their marketing images, pictures of it sitting in a kitchen, which is confusing to me

But if you are that person, you want a kitchen computer. You need ray tracing for those cookbook websites that you're visiting

Exactly. It's also updated to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. So better wireless connectivity as well

And the same colors. They didn't cut any colors. And we didn't get black. We didn't get black. What happened to the black

We thought for sure that was going to happen. No, it didn't. Oh, well, there is another missing piece to this puzzle as well

I'm really happy with the iMac, you know, for the people who are buying an iMac

But I was hoping for an updated Magic Mouse and keyboard. We all thought it was going to happen

I thought it was a sure thing. Absolute sure. We should have known that there weren't actually any concrete rumors and everyone was just like talking about it, you know, like wishing it into existence

But sadly, our dreams did not come true. It still ships with a USB-C to lightning cable

I'm not going to buy a lightning magic trackpad. I want to I still have a few years left with lightning since I'm keeping my phone for another year

And my wife is going to be on lightning for a while. So I know that like lightning is going to stay in my life

But I mean, that doesn't mean I'm going to buy a new lightning accessory

No, they're dead. I can avoid it. I mean, it's like, you know, they're on their way out

So you're going to have to buy as little as as as necessary just to make your life work

I will stick with my sad original magic trackpad. I'll have to buy new AA batteries for it soon

Maybe put some epoxy across that big old crack on the top of it or something, or maybe some scotch tape or something, you know

You don't feel it. You know, I haven't cut my fingers or anything like it still feels like it's right

It's glass. I don't even think about that. It actually seems dangerous

Like chewing through your headphone cable. That's why you gotta not get cats, man. I look, Hey, look, I love cats

I love cats, but they are destroyers. They will destroy everything in your whole life
