If you have a family, odds are high that you probably share a house, a car or two
0:05
some furniture, but you might not give as much attention to what you share in your digital lives
0:09
even though things like your photo library might be just as important to you. Today I'm going to
0:14
show you the six best features you get when you set up iCloud Family Sharing
0:22
Family Sharing is really easy to set up. From Settings, you tap on your name at the top
0:26
hit Family Sharing, and from here you can add up to five Apple IDs to the group
0:31
You can hit Create an Account for a Child for a child who doesn't have an Apple ID yet
0:35
Let's start with benefit number one, setting up a shared photo library. Now, everybody in your
0:40
family probably has a different subset of photos that they've taken or sent or received of all of
0:47
your different family events or trips, and you might have one person in your family who takes
0:52
it upon themselves to share all of their pictures with everybody else, but they probably don't have
0:57
a complete set themselves. Well, shared photo libraries will make sure everybody has every
1:03
picture in its full original high quality. And the best part is that this photo sharing happens
1:08
intelligently and automatically, so you never have to think about it, but you always have manual
1:14
control to keep your photos private when you want that. So whenever you're using the camera app and
1:18
you're at home or you're out and about but you're all together, any photos you take will be synced to
1:23
the shared library overnight. And you can always change this by hitting the yellow Family Sharing
1:28
icon directly from the camera. In the Photos app, you can move pictures to the shared library after
1:33
the fact or pull them back into your personal library, and you'll get recommendations on what
1:38
to add inside the For You tab. And don't worry, images you save from the web, memes, screenshots
1:44
those will not be automatically added to the shared library. You can read all about how to set
1:48
this up by clicking here or using the link in the description. Number two, location sharing. When
1:53
everybody's out and about, getting everybody back in one place can feel like herding cats. You can
1:59
text, you can call, but they might not respond or pick up. Everybody seeing where everybody else is
2:05
is a huge bit of peace of mind. Turn this on in Settings, Family, Location Sharing. Adults have to
2:12
opt in. Children can have it forced upon them. From anytime, you can open the Find My app to see
2:18
where everybody is. You can also see it directly from an iMessage conversation, and you can even
2:23
add a widget to your home screen. Another superpower this enables is that you can forcibly ring the
2:28
speakers of someone else's iPhone or Apple Watch if you're trying to find a lost device or if you
2:34
just need to get their attention. From the Find My app, hit the Devices tab, tap on a specific device
2:40
and you can just hit Play Sound. It is much louder than the sound that plays when you're
2:47
trying to ping your phone from your watch or the other way around. I recommend you use this power
2:53
lightly, but it is a tool at your disposal. And you can also see the charge level of their devices
2:59
if, for example, they're leaving the house with their phone at only 12%. Number three, you have
3:05
all sorts of powerful parental controls at your disposal. Now, how much you choose to do is a
3:10
highly personal question that at least someone will judge you for no matter what you do. I had
3:16
pretty free reign as a child, but none of those tools really existed for a Windows 2000, nor did
3:23
I carry my Pentium 2 computer in my pocket. But you have a lot of tools at your disposal if you're
3:29
all in on the Apple ecosystem. For example, you can set up a child with just an Apple Watch
3:34
You'll be able to see their location with it strapped to their wrist. You'll be able to text
3:38
them, call them without giving them the full power of a smartphone. Setting up an iPhone or iPad on
3:43
their behalf is still incredibly easy, and you have the power to limit their screen time, contacts
3:49
and internet access. I also recommend you set up Ask to Buy. This lets them request purchases
3:54
on the App Store for apps or in-app purchases that you can approve or deny without giving them
3:59
the full frightening power of an unmitigated credit card on their Apple ID. Number four
4:05
backing up to iCloud will help you rest easy at night if some people in your family take a clumsy
4:11
and cavalier approach to personal care of their trusted devices. Having a full nightly backup
4:17
means that a replacement device can be set up exactly as the old one was the night before
4:22
And not everybody needs to buy their own storage. In Settings, Family, Subscriptions, iCloud Plus
4:28
you can buy one plan that's shared amongst everybody to save money. Number five, it's
4:33
actually not just iCloud, but other services like Apple Arcade, News+, Fitness, TV+, will all
4:40
automatically be shared with your family if you're one of the dozens of people who subscribe to Apple
4:46
News+. You don't need to password share to get those coveted Apple News crosswords. Now, Apple
4:52
Music specifically does not automatically get shared with the rest of your family. Probably
4:58
something to do with the record companies. It's always the record companies. On the other hand
5:03
though, upgrading to a family plan is only an extra $6 a month, which is less than the cost
5:08
of two individual subscriptions. And finally, if some people in your family want to buy a new game
5:13
or subscribe to a new service, you might not need to buy it separately for everyone in your family
5:18
Just go to Settings, Family, Purchase Sharing, and some apps and games and subscription services
5:25
will be shared amongst everybody in the group, wherever developers have enabled it. Just look
5:30
for the Supports Family Sharing label in the App Store. So your digital life doesn't have to be
5:35
complicated and messy. Setting up family sharing is free and really easy. I have articles that go
5:40
into more depth on how to set up some of these features linked in the video description, along
5:44
with links if you want to subscribe to some new Apple services in there too. If you learned
5:48
something from this video, remember to like and subscribe. I'm Dickerfin Jones with Cult of Mac
