If you've followed the Kultamak YouTube channel for a while, hopefully you've noticed the
0:04
videos improving over time, in terms of my presenting, writing, filming and editing
0:09
But as well as techniques and experience, I've also been trying to improve equipment as often as I can
0:13
One of the biggest improvements in my opinion is the camera quality
0:17
Since running the channel I've gone through 3 or 4 different cameras before finally landing on the Blackmagic 4K production camera, which I now use on a daily basis
0:24
The reason I've stayed with this camera is that it shoots S-Log, meaning I can choose to not have any in-camera processing and instead recording a flat image
0:31
That way I have more control of colour and exposure in post-production. It also films in ProRes, so I don't have to do any format conversion in order to edit
0:38
I have the option for 4K and it allows me to use Canon mount lenses
0:42
Blackmagic has been around since 1984 producing capture cards and software, but only started
0:46
producing cameras in the last 4 or 5 years. One of the most interesting to me is the Micro Cinema Camera
0:52
It starts at $995 just for the body which is about the size of a large apple
0:56
In fact it's the world's smallest digital film camera weighing just 10.65oz
1:00
If you're not familiar with production ready cameras, buying just the body is a pretty standard affair
1:05
Usually grips, lenses, screens and so on come as an extra, as depending on the type of rig
1:09
you plan to set up, depends on what accessories you need. The obvious use for the Blackmagic Micro Camera is for drones and car rigs, which is primarily
1:17
what this camera has been designed for, and easy enough to mount thanks to its 3 tripod
1:21
mounting points. Ok, so it costs $500 more than the top of the range GoPro, but the advantage of having
1:26
a camera like this is that the colour profile isn't baked in, you can use interchangeable
1:30
lenses and you can shoot either Cinema DNG RAW or Apple ProRes 1080p with a range of
1:35
frame rates. It uses a Super 16 size sensor with 13 stops of dynamic range
1:41
On the side there's a 3.5mm mic jack, HDMI and a customisable expansion port which I'll
1:46
come back to in a minute. The Micro Camera utilises Micro Four Thirds lenses, which means there's a wide variety
1:51
of lenses available or you can use an adapter, and you're not stuck to the standard wide
1:55
angle lens such as with the GoPro. You can also film in S-Log which means it retains more information in the picture, again
2:01
making it easier to match the look of the smaller drone camera to the rest of your footage
2:05
As well as drones, the Blackmagic Micro Camera is also ideal as a tiny production camera
2:09
which is how I tested it for the majority of my time, as I didn't have access to a drone
2:14
As long as you've got enough cash to fork out for a monitor and some lenses, you're good to go, and having such a powerful camera in such a tiny package is great for anyone
2:21
who needs to run and gun about instead of carrying a bulky camera
2:24
As you can see from the footage, the picture quality is amazing. For a camera to produce such beautiful images from such a small body is ridiculous
2:48
One thing I didn't really play with is the expansion port, which comes with this mess
2:51
of cables. But you can use it to map functions of joysticks and controllers, so you can control the camera's
2:56
settings whilst it's in the air. The only thing I disliked about the camera is the placement of the buttons on the front
3:02
I know there's not exactly anywhere else to put them, but they're just a bit awkward to get to
3:06
If you're looking for a new drone camera or just need a tiny rig, the Blackmagic Micro
3:11
Cinema Camera is the perfect fit for that cinema quality look. Well that's it for this video
