Let's get into it
0:02
Let's talk about WWDC. LK, I'm sending this over to you. This is very exciting
0:09
Let's talk about the event, and we can talk about hardware as well. Yeah, so earlier this week, Apple announced that
0:16
WWD is coming back on June 6, and it's online only again for the third year in a row
0:23
but there's a twist. So, yeah, 2022, my goodness me, my, my God
0:30
I can't do it. I can't say that word. The 2022 iteration of Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference will start on June 6
0:37
Apple promised you to the event will showcase the latest innovations. Here's a big surprise in iOS, iPad OS, MacOS, WatchOS, and TVOS
0:44
Who would have predicted that? So anyway, this is code for unveiling the next major upgrades to these operating systems
0:52
So it's going pretty exciting. Yeah, I'm looking forward to iOS 16. So it's going to be online only for most people, but fortunately a few developers and students will be able to
0:59
watch the keynote from Apple Park. So typically, thousands of developers flock to the San Francisco Bay Area for a rare chance
1:06
to learn from Apple staffers in person. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the last two developers conference took place online only
1:14
This changes in 2022, sort of. Apple's going to host a special day for developers and students at Apple Park to watch the
1:21
WWDC 2020 keynote and the state of the union presentations. this kind of goes back to what you're saying
1:29
Lewis like we're going to be watching a pre-recorded video it's not even going to be live at all
1:36
and that kind of takes some of the well it definitely takes the energy out of it to me
1:42
it's like oh we're all going to sit there and watch this thing together I don't want to say that
1:46
yeah I don't want to say to Tim Cook you know you know quoted my
1:51
amazing opinion piece but yeah I mean that's exactly I thought. I was like, I almost tweeted like a ha-ha
2:01
You mean like Nelson from? Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, okay. I mean, I think it's awesome to do, you know, I hope that they flash audience reaction, you know
2:11
Yeah. I mean, I hope that it's, they're visible there, you know, but I don't know
2:16
I mean, they are going to be watching a movie. I mean, watching people watch a movie is maybe not so awesome
2:21
I don't know. It's hard to tell. Watching people watch a movie. That's exactly what's going to be happening here
2:26
I hope they bring it back live next year. I thought they would have it live this year
2:30
because the COVID stuff seems to be really fizzling out and most people are vaccinated in the days
2:38
That seems like it seems like it. At least for now, you seem like it seems like you would be safe to do it at this time of year
2:44
Like if it were going to be in November, you probably wouldn't be as safe. But like this time of year with, you know
2:50
the COVID numbers that we have and everyone's spending most of time outdoors, it just seems like it would be fine to do it indoors
2:55
But whatever. They want to be cautious. Okay. Started to rise again, though. That's the problem
3:00
They could they set up a bunch of lawn chairs, you know, in the middle of the Apple HQ and, you know, the rainbow stages and do it there
3:06
Did you see? Google did that. Did you see that? They did it outdoors? They had an outdoor win with, and it looked really weird because everybody's like on their little, it looked like everybody was playing twister, you know, or everybody was on a twister, you know, or everybody was on a twister, whatever that is, Matt, right
3:19
Like, you've got your little thing, you're six feet from somebody else, you're outside. I don't know. I don't know that that was better
3:24
It was kind of weird. Well, someone pointed out on Twitter that the money you save from flying to San Francisco and booking a hotel for a week, you could buy yourself a brand new Mac studio and a studio display
3:35
So, now, look on the bright side. That's hilarious. Well, I mean, a lot of people like the way it happened last year, right
3:41
I mean, now instead of just, you know, a certain number of people getting to, everybody gets kind of the same experience, right
3:47
So, I mean. Well, people were complaining about the lottery system before, weren't they? It was, you know, they couldn't get in year after year
3:53
people, because there were so many limited spots and, of course, for the people who did get in
3:59
it is totally valuable to be able to meet people in person and network and meet Apple employees
4:04
It's a network, I think, and seeing friends as a year after year that people really like
4:08
And the same thing was true for Macworld. I mean, that was the best thing, seeing people you hadn't seen all year that you see every year
4:13
you know, these fellow Mac fans and familiar journalists and stuff like that
4:18
But, you know, you can't recreate that. So, you know, as usual, you can be sitting home watching a Zoom presentation for the
4:23
third year in a row. But I, you know, I quite like, I don't hate the online presentations that they do
4:30
You know the pre the can ones the pre ones But I think you right You know it doesn have the live stage feel thing has a you know it gives it more energy I think
4:39
Yeah, totally different energy then. I don't mind watching it. I don't mind watching a pre-recorded event either, but I would like to see them go back to
4:46
the live thing because that just had so much more of a community feel to it because
4:50
like we're all watching it live and there's reactions live as things are happening
4:54
There's reactions to product announcements. And I thought that was pretty cool
4:58
So I'd love to see me to go back to that. Let's talk about product expectations here because I think that's something that people are probably interested in
5:05
So first of all, freaking great video by Max Tech out this week
5:11
I will put a link to it in the show notes if you want to check it out. And they're talking about what to expect at WWDC 2022
5:19
And as we all know, this is supposed to be the end of the transition
5:24
So we are almost certainly going to get a new Mac Pro happening
5:29
at WWDC and even German expects that we're going to get it. Now, it probably won't be released at WWDC
5:36
or maybe even anytime soon after that. Like, it seems like we're going to get
5:41
and I think German said this, we'll have the final Mac Pro, the final transition to Apple Silicon in September
5:47
but they're almost certainly going to announce it at the keynote events for WDC
5:53
And it seems like we might also be getting a brand new monitor. And if you have just bought the studio display
5:59
or if you're thinking about buying a studio display, you may want to wait and hear this information
6:04
because this might alter your purchase decision. In fact, I'm having all sorts of buyers remorse
6:10
I'll talk about this in a second. I bought the M1 Ultra Mac Studio. And man, that thing is just so confusing
6:16
because it was so hyped to perform at such a level. And all the benchmarks, all the real world performance
6:26
indicates that it's just not, it's just not performing the way we would expect
6:32
I know we talked about this in the past, and I thought I would just kind of put a cap on it and give you one more short presentation on really what's going on with the M1 Ultra
6:40
Yeah, I won't bring it up 10 more times, you know, in the next 10 weeks. You have my curiosity
6:45
So what's the rumor about the new monitor? Okay, we could start with that. So there are also rumors going around that not only is Apple going to be
6:54
announcing the Mac Pro, right, with Apple Silicon, but they're also going to be essentially releasing
7:00
what seems to me to be like a mini pro XDR display
7:05
So if you're wondering why the studio display doesn't have mini LED backlights
7:11
it doesn't have ProMotion, well, it seems like those features are going to be present
7:16
in the 27-inch pro-XDR mini, as I'm calling it. So it's essentially
7:24
yeah, it's essentially going to be a 27-inch version of the pro-XDR display
7:27
which actually makes a lot of sense. So if they price this thing like around 3 grand, right
7:33
which I'm suspecting it will be like $3,000, $3,500, it will be $27 inches, which means it will be $5K
7:40
it will be retina. So it doesn't have the resolution of the ProXDR display
7:44
but it will have a lot of the same features. It will just be a smaller form factor, and it will be 5K and some 6K
7:50
And it's supposed to have mini-LED, so it's going to give a vastly improved contrast ratio
7:57
it would probably be a million to one versus what is in the current studio display
8:02
which is like 1,000 or 1,000 or 1 because it just has a single LED back panel that doesn't have any
8:09
variation in brightness. It's just they're all the same brightness, right, all the time. And it's supposed to also have pro motion, which I don't think that, well, I'm getting ahead of myself here
8:19
So we'll see what happens with that. But that is one of the rumors. And I think one of the people who has been talking about this has been
8:27
Ross Young, who's one of the ysts out there, who has a pretty accurate track record
8:32
And he's saying that he thinks it will be revealed along with the Mac Pro, the updated Mac Pro
8:37
And then the other thing will be the Mac Pro, right? So the Mac Pro, we don't know exactly what's going to happen with it
8:42
We know that during the last keynote when they were releasing the Mac Studio
8:49
They said the transition to M1 ships is complete, and there won't be any, or they said
8:53
I should rephrase that, that there won't be any new M1 ships. So that got people thinking well wait a second like if there not going to be any new M1 chips what the heck is going in the Mac Pro And it seems like they actually going to release a chip that special to the Mac Pro and actually give it a completely new naming scheme So it will include the M1 Max in probably like a quadruple orientation
9:19
So instead of being two like there is in the Max Studio, there will be four. And they might call it like the X1, right
9:25
So it's going to be like the Mac Studio pro version of the Mac Studio
9:31
M1 Ultra version. It's going to be two of those and they're going to engineer it
9:36
so that you can have four of those in the same computer and they're going to give an entirely new naming convention
9:40
So the Mac Studio or the Mac Pro with X1 Ultra or X1 Extreme, some people are calling it
9:48
and then you have the new monitor. So everyone will be so excited that
9:51
they'll be panicking to open their wallets and give Apple another $10,000 or $15,000
9:57
So if they release a 27-inch XDR display mini I would truly
10:04
I don't want to be vulgar but I'd be pretty miffed about that
10:07
you know it's like well you know open up the one you got
10:11
and check it out first I mean it ain't that bad yeah so you're looking
10:17
you're using one right now how do you like it Leander it's lovely it's beautiful
10:21
it's really really a lovely lovely display it's super colorful it's really high resolution
10:25
I mean I'm looking at I had a just I got a Samsung one here which I thought was a pretty
10:29
nice display. I've had two external displays, one either side. And this Samsung display that I thought was pretty good
10:35
I don't know what the model number is. And I got a Ben Q one on the other side that rotates
10:40
The Ben Q one is actually much better than the Samsung one. But yeah, in comparison, it's an awful junk
10:45
I got a bad to look at it. It's horrible. You know, it burns my eyes
10:49
And this display is lovely. And as you saw the camera, the, what's it called
10:53
I've already forgotten the name of the feature. I always forget the name of that feature, too
10:57
I have no idea why. I'm totally happy with it. It was pricey
11:05
It's not cheap, but this display, I think, is going to last me a long time
11:10
It's a really good size. I'm totally happy with it. I'm delighted with it. I'm sure I will be, too
11:14
I just, like I said before, I'm not going to go into the whole rant again, but I just feel
11:19
like they could have made it special and they didn't. They just basically, it's a cash grab
11:24
It really is. It's a nice display, but there's nothing special about it
11:28
Aside from the fact that, and this is the thing. It's a 5K display
11:33
It's really nice. I've pissed my old MyMac. I can't use my old MyMac as an external display because it's basically the same panel
11:42
And I was like thinking because they used to have that, what was it called
11:47
I wasn't in the future. Target display mode. Where you could use an iMac as an external display
11:55
you know and they've crippled it with this machine and all the ones subsequent after that
12:01
well apparently there's a good there's a good reason for that there's a lot of conspiracy theories I'm a typical apple you know they can't use this
12:06
but apparently it doesn't thunderbolt cables don't have enough bandwidth to drive it
12:10
as an external display so you'd actually you'd actually somehow double up the
12:16
someone said there was a technical way to do it you have to do you have to push
12:20
it through two thunderbolt cables or something like that which sounds like a
12:25
airy nightmare, but, you know, there was a technical reason why they weren't doing it, but that's a
12:29
disappointment. So I've got a beautiful display right here, you know, my old IMAQ, which I can't use
12:34
Yeah, so I'm not saying it's a bad display. I mean, I know that I'm going to like it once I get it
12:39
unboxed, which I open the box. But, but it just, you know, it just feels like it's just
12:45
just like it's straight in the trash. I mean, it's a little too similar to the IMac and it's so expensive. It just does kind of feel like a cash grab, but, and, and what I really wanted is the thing that
12:54
we are hearing might show up at WWDC, which is the 27
12:58
inch 5K HDR, mini LED backlights, pro motion, like that is what I wanted. That's what I
13:06
was hoping we were going to get is a mini pro XDR display. Instead, what we got was
13:10
a 5K IMac panel put into its own M1 iMac chassis and
13:17
without the computer there. So that's what we got. That's not what I wanted though
13:22
Basically it has an iPad in it, doesn't it? that you can't use. Yeah, that you can't actually use
13:26
Yeah, and the A13, I just think is completely superfluous. Like, it's, the only reason it's there is to enable center stage and, um, 3D audio
13:36
on older Macs. That seems to be the only reason that it even there So it like for me I like okay well if you have a newer Mac you didn even need the A13 to be in the display because your Mac could have driven that performance Anyway I doing the I doing the rant I said I wasn going to do
13:50
So, yeah, I'm going to get it, I'm going to get an inbox. And the other thing is, hold on, wait, is there anything else to talk about for WWWC
13:56
I think that's it. So we're expecting a Mac Pro probably with an X1 extreme
14:02
Well, hold on. There's a lot of rumors about the ARVR headset. Oh, I don't think that's happening
14:07
I don't. I'm glad that you brought it up. don't think that's happening and here's why. Do you think that Apple would reveal an entirely new
14:13
paradigm of computer via a virtual event where some students are going to be watching a pre-recorded
14:19
video? I don't think so. Students are going to love it. They're going to be clapping and then
14:23
and then like, what? That'd be the weirdest marketing lunch I've ever seen. No, when they finally
14:29
do release the Apple goggles or whatever they end up calling it, or the eyesight, the E-Y-E site
14:37
as I've coined it. They need to make that an absolute spectacle
14:41
Like it needs to be brought on stage on the face of John Claude Van Damme doing those stretches
14:50
Space between two trucks. Space between two trucks driving down the road
14:54
Like that's what it needs to be. Like it needs to be some kind of epic events that people won't forget
14:59
They can record and showcase at this event. I mean, in the thinking that they have to get this in the hands of developers
15:07
like get them thinking about it so that there's something when a thing launches
15:12
I mean, that's not a bad point. And that's one of the reasons why I thought they were going to debut at WWDC
15:17
But now that they're doing it virtually, I'm like, dude, are they really going to
15:22
are they going to announce a product of that magnitude and a completely new paradigm in computing
15:28
And they're going to announce it via a pre-recorded event. Maybe they would
15:32
No glitches. No glitches. And they are inviting some people. to do some things
15:40
Maybe we'll strap those on the, you know, I mean, that's another part of this that we've
15:44
been missing, right, is hands-on after these events. Like, they take some people down and let them play with the brand new thing, right
15:50
They're going to strap it on the students' heads. They're going to have students all sitting there, like that, you know, Zuckerberg famous
15:54
picture where all the things are. They're going to be watching the keynote inside the other than
15:58
They will not let that happen. That was the most hideous-looking picture
16:03
Welcome to the hive. Although it was iconic. I mean, we all know exactly what picture you're talking about, right
16:09
It's like where everyone is just frozen and they're, they're practically drooling because their brains are being reprogrammed with these headsets on and then Zuckerberg is off there in the corner, like, you know, looking so proud of himself
16:21
I just don't think they're going to announce the headset. I think I went to the Apple Watch launch event
16:28
That was a big deal. Everyone was there, all these celebrities, you know, all the Apple execs. It was a U-2 was on stage
16:33
You remember that thing, but they touched fingers at the end. You know, I think that's probably a good point
16:39
You know, they probably would make a big deal out of it. But I don't know. They probably could make a big deal of a WDC
16:44
But, you know, I think you're right. I think it's probably going to come in the fall maybe if they do do it
16:48
And there hasn't been any manufacturing rumors really, have there? Yeah. You know what I mean
16:52
You know, it's like, again, new computing paradigm. They're going to have to invite people from every walk of life, every publication to try it on
17:03
and then dispense all the notes that they give everyone, right? It's all the YouTubers can pretend like they're reviewing it, but they're literally just reading off a list of things that were said at the keynote event
17:13
Ooh, bitter. No, remember what I said? I said, I would literally do that
17:18
If TC would just send me early access, I will, he doesn't even have to type it out
17:22
He can just write on a napkin. And I will literally be like, this is the best headset that has been made
17:27
And I'll be reading it like that. Like, I won't even pretend like I'm not. Bitterness confirmed
17:32
Okay, so there's your hardware expectations. And maybe there'll be a surprise in there
17:36
but I think that's what we're getting. We will probably see Mac Pro. Almost certainly
17:40
it sounds like we're getting a new Pro XDR display mini, 5K with the features that you want
17:48
But that display will probably be, again, I'm going to guess $3,000
17:53
maybe even, maybe even like $3,500. If the ProXDR display is $5,000 and they're shrinking it down
18:00
with the same technology, it's probably going to be at least $3,000
