iPhone Duo merges iPhone and iPad into one brilliant device

The just announced iPhone Duo is an iPad that fits in your pocket. The 7.6-inch screen is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but folds up to be easily pocketable.

iPad users are well accustomed to side-by-side multitasking, and the Duo offers that too. And the dual-display design enables some camera tricks no other iPhone can pull off.  

“With the largest display ever on iPhone that still fits easily in your pocket, combined with the power of A20 Pro, iPhone Duo helps you stay more immersed and productive wherever you go, whether you’re enjoying content, multitasking across apps, or gaming,” said John Ternus, Apple’s new CEO.

iPhone Duo is a pocket-size iPad

In the months leading up to the launch of the iPhone Duo, many posts on social media asked “Why” or “What is this for?” The answer is simple: it’s an iPhone as big as an iPad that can easily fold up and go.

And a larger screen is just what is needed by the growing number of Americans for whom their phone has effectively become their primary computer. Apple’s traditional “slab” phones are as large as they can get. There’s a reason why the largest iPhone models have been about the same size since 2020 — much bigger and the device becomes too much for a pocket.

Hence the iPhone Duo. It’s for mobile-first users… who have the money for a cutting-edge product, of course.

Anyone who carries around both an iPhone and an iPad will love this new model. It has a smaller external display for the sorts of things you use a phone for, and a larger internal screen for jobs that you previously pulled out an iPad to do.

If you prefer a traditional phone, there’s good news! Apple makes loads of those. The folding model is just one of the options, and no one will make you buy it. But consider that back in 2006, there were millions of people who sneered at smartphones and insisted they would never give up their RAZR flip phone. Look how that turned out.

iPhone + iPad = iPhone Duo

One way to look at the iPhone Duo is the device is what might result if an iPhone and an iPad had a baby.

Pick up the handset and you’ll see its 5.4-inch external screen. This makes the device “glanceable” — with a quick look, you can check your notifications and read text messages. In other words, you can use the Duo like you have any previous iPhone.

But when you need to do more, the device opens like a book with its vertical hinge. That lets you watch video on the 7.6-inch screen, or look at a web page that hasn’t been squeezed down to fit a typical phone screen.

And that is only the start. The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first handset with side-by-side multitasking. That means you can look at a restaurant’s description in Apple Maps while writing a text message about it, for example.

So thin: For good or ill

When open, the iPhone Duo is a super-slender 0.21 inches thick. That means it’s only 0.44 thick when closed. And the other external dimensions are 6.48 inches by 4.64 inches, so this device is very pocketable.

Despite the svelte shape, Apple squeezed in two batteries that it promises provide “up 24 hours of usage per charge when both displays are used equally.

And MagSafe made the cut, too, enabling a range of magnetic accessories like wireless chargers, power banks, desktop stands and more.

But the designers couldn’t fit in everything. Missing features start with Face ID. Unlocking the drive us done with Touch ID built into the handset’s side button.

And that’s not the real kicker. The iPhone Duo boasts a 48MP Fusion Main camera as well as a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. Note the lack of a telephoto lens. The iPhone 18 Pro models have one — the Duo does not.

Two screens makes for new camera options

If you missed it, “Duo” refers to the inner and the outer screen, and Apple designed its camera software take advantage of both.

The most obvious use is that there are front-facing cameras for each screen, with the inner display featuring Apple’s first camera beneath the display. They enable some useful tricks.

Dual Capture in FaceTime shares front and rear camera feeds simultaneously. And Duo FaceTime lets two people use the same foldable to be part of a group call, each on their own screen.

The Duo Preview feature shows a live preview of a photo on the outer display, helping subjects see themselves so they pose, check their framing and guide the shot.

And there’s Kid Cue, which plays animations from Peanuts on the outer display to grab the attention of children so they look at the camera.

A20 chip brings max power

The iPhone Duo uses the new A20 Pro processor, which Apple says provides up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. Part of the secret is a custom-designed vapor chamber to dissipate heat from the chip and prevent thermal throttling.

The A20 Pro features a six-core CPU that is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro. Its seven-core GPU delivers up to 40% faster performance while using less power, while a new dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles the compute power available for running AI models on the device. The chip also offers 50% more unified memory bandwidth.

iPhone Duo release day comes in October, not September

While Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on Wednesday at the Surprise and Shine event, it won’t launch for over a month. Preorders start Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23.

There were predictions that the foldable would cost $2,500 or more, but the 256GB base model is $1,999 in the U.S. That said, storage options also include 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, and they boost the price up to $3,199.
