Apple plans a top-to-bottom revamp of Siri in iOS 27 that turns the beleaguered voice assistant into an AI chatbot at the heart of iPhones, Macs and iPads, according to a new report.
Apple might even launch a standalone Siri app that, like competing apps from ChatGPT and Google Gemini, serves as a central hub for all the user’s interactions with the AI assistant.
Siri revamp: What to expect in iOS 27
Apple proposed making Siri the face of Apple Intelligence way back in 2024. However, delay after embarrassing delay kept almost all of the fantastic-sounding features from launching.
A $1 billion deal with Alphabet hooked Siri’s star to Google Gemini in early 2026, but nothing tangible has come of the alliance yet — at least not publicly. In fact, Apple’s inability to pull off the AI upgrade in a timely fashion reportedly delayed the launch of several new products.
Still, Apple remains hard at work on the soup-to-nuts Siri upgrade, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.
“The goal is to transform the technology from a traditional voice assistant into a systemwide AI agent with deep integration across applications,” wrote Mark Gurman.
Apple hopes to show off the new Siri at WWDC26 this June, with at least some of the advanced AI features arriving in iOS 27 and other platform updates this fall. Some features might take longer to get right, so Apple could stagger their release over several operating system updates.
Apple continues to test a standalone Siri app, which might find its way into users’ hands. Plus, the company is crafting an entirely new look and feel for Siri that will work across various Apple devices.
An ‘Ask Siri’ button and Siri in the Dynamic Island
After the upgrade, users would still trigger Siri in familiar ways, by voice or by holding the iPhone’s side button. Otherwise, Apple plans to rework the Siri user interface in a major way, replacing the glow-up introduced in iOS 18.
Gurman described one potential design, which would place Siri in the iPhone’s Dynamic Island:
One new design in testing places Siri at the top of the screen within the Dynamic Island, the mini-interface that Apple introduced in 2022. After it’s activated, Siri will prompt the user to “Search or Ask.”
When processing a request, a pill-shaped indicator labeled “Searching” appears, alongside a glowing Siri icon. Once results are ready, the interface expands into a larger translucent panel with Apple’s Liquid Glass design. Users can pull the menu down further to begin conversing back and forth.
iOS 27 will bring deeper Siri integration into the Apple ecosystem
In addition, Apple might make other changes to more deeply integrate Siri into the company’s devices.
“A systemwide ‘Ask Siri’ toggle will appear in menus across built-in apps, allowing users to send selected content into a new Siri conversation,” Gurman wrote. “For example, they could request more information about highlighted text or pull up related emails.”
Apple also plans to replace the current Spotlight search with Siri. It would pull in more results from the open web as well as generating “deeper summaries of daily news using content from Apple News,” Gurman wrote.
Apple also might add a “Write with Siri” integration at the top of the keyboard. This would showcase Apple’s AI Writing Tools, which are currently one of the most useful features of Apple Intelligence.
Still, given Apple’s string of AI setbacks, and the current state of Apple Intelligence, who knows exactly when the new Siri will launch — or how capable it will actually be.
A standalone Siri app?
If Apple releases the standalone Siri app, which it’s currently testing, in iOS 27, here’s what you can expect, according to Gurman:
The app’s main interface will display prior conversations in either a list or a grid of rounded rectangles with text previews. Users can pin favorite chats, save older conversations, search across interactions and start new chats via a prominent plus button.
The conversation view resembles a thread in Apple’s Messages app, with chat bubbles and a text entry field. It also includes a toggle for switching in and out of voice mode and an option to upload attachments — such as documents and photos — for analysis.
This would give users a central location to refer to all their previous interactions with Siri.
As Gurman pointed out, Apple’s plans (and timeline) for Siri’s AI upgrade in iOS 27 could change.
