FINALLY! In iOS 13, Apple has finally gone all in on giving Reminders the same love Notes saw a few years ago. Now Reminders is more powerful and more robust for creating and managing tasks, and getting things done!
I'm all in on Reminders with iOS 13, and simplifying my task management system to Apple's first-party app.

What's going on everybody, Ian here for Cult of Mac and now that the summer is nearing
0:10
an end and we are getting closer and closer to the official release of iOS 13, I thought
0:14
we should dive into one of the more functional, more useful and more kind of surprising changes
0:20
in iOS 13, Reminders. Now in iOS 13, Apple's finally kind of modernizing and revamping Reminders to make it more useful
0:28
more functional and a little bit more competitive against a lot of the third-party reminder
0:32
apps out in the App Store. From a visual standpoint, the new Reminders app is split into two sections
0:38
Up at the top you have your quick filtering groups, which include things like Today, so
0:43
it's any tasks that's due today, Scheduled, which is all your upcoming tasks that have
0:47
a due date or a reminder date on them, a section for All Tasks, so it's every task across all
0:53
your lists, and a new tab for Flagged Tasks, which we'll get into in just a second
0:59
Below that you have your section for your reminder lists. Now lists are just as they have been previously, except now you can append a little glyph-type
1:08
icon to each one, so you can add some visual differentiation between your lists
1:13
Lists can also now be grouped into little sections or folder-type things to allow you
1:18
to quickly say, these are my home tasks, these are my work tasks, these are my personal
1:23
things or my business things, so that you can have different context depending on what
1:27
it is you're working on. Now I find this really handy because I don't like to have my work tasks and my home tasks
1:32
all mixed together, but I do like to use a single unified task manager for all of those
1:37
things so I'm always going to the same place no matter what task or project I'm working on
1:42
Inside each of the lists are your reminders just as they always have been, with a few
1:46
minor changes. Now when creating a reminder you can append things like notes, URLs, or images far more
1:53
easily and far more conveniently than you could before. Things that used to require Siri to activate certain features can now just be added in
1:59
text as you're creating your reminders. Additionally there is that flagged option, which flagging basically allows you to indicate
2:06
that something is important enough, that you need to work on it right now, or maybe it's something that you need to keep seeing in your reminders list but it doesn't have a
2:13
specific due date so it's something that you're constantly kind of seeing there as
2:17
a thing to work on. You also have the ability to set when you're reminded about your certain tasks on your
2:23
reminders list. You can set it for a time like you could before, you can set it for a location like you could
2:28
before, but now on iOS 13 Apple has also added the option to be reminded about something
2:33
when you're messaging someone. Now this is pretty cool because if you have something that you want to work on or need
2:39
to ask someone about at a certain time, when you open up your iMessage app and you start
2:43
texting with them, you'll get a notification banner at the top that says, hey don't forget
2:48
to remind this person about this thing or don't forget to do this thing while you're
2:51
talking to this person so that you don't forget when you start talking to that person
2:56
Another new option of reminders in iOS 13 is the ability to have subtasks
3:01
Subtasks are great if you're working on a multi-step project where it's, I need to do
3:05
this thing, but to do this thing, I have to do these five things
3:09
You can now create subtasks within each reminder in one of two ways
3:13
One create the top level reminder and then within the details screen of that reminder
3:18
you can insert subtasks or you can create several tasks all in a single reminders list
3:24
and then use the indent feature, which is swiping from left to right to actually indent
3:29
them underneath the previous task, which allows you to collapse the entire stack when you're
3:33
not working on it, but expand it out and view those individual subtasks when you need to
3:40
This makes reminders much more useful and much more powerful for people seeking a little
3:44
bit more elaborate task management system than what reminders has offered in the past
3:49
Now outside of those features, most of reminders is pretty much unchanged
3:53
It still integrates perfectly with Siri. You can still do things like be on a webpage or an email and say, remind me about this
4:00
later and it will add a reminder and link to that email message or that webpage or whatever
4:04
it is. You can also still use reminders from your share extension just like you could before
4:11
Reminders also syncs across iCloud as it has before with one minor exception in iOS 13
4:17
To get iCloud syncing working in iOS 13, you have to upgrade your entire reminders list
4:23
Once you upgrade your reminders on one device, all your other devices will need to be upgraded
4:28
to iOS 13 or macOS Catalina to support a bunch of these new features
4:33
So that's reminders in iOS 13, a solid, much needed upgrade to Apple's task management system
4:39
As somebody who's tried tons of different task managers trying to find something that has the right balance between simplicity and powerful features, I'm actually pretty stoked
4:48
for Apple's changes to reminders and think this might be my reminders app, my to-do app
4:52
my task management app going forward. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments down below
