Tessan Voyager 205 travel adapter review

Most travel adapters are glorified plug converters — handy for fitting your charger into a foreign outlet, but rarely powerful enough to replace the pile of power bricks modern travelers typically carry.

When they do include USB-C ports, the ports usually deliver basic charging speeds, making them suitable only for topping up a phone overnight or charging low-power devices like a smartwatch. In most cases, they work best as a backup solution rather than a true replacement for a dedicated charger.

With seven ports and enough wattage to rival a desktop charging hub, the Tessan Voyager 205 promises to shrink your travel kit down to a single accessory — if it can deliver on that ambitious spec sheet.

Even though Tessan uses gallium nitride (GaN) tech to keep the Voyager’s size in check, it’s still bigger and bulkier than almost all travel adapters you may have come across. Instead of a compact footprint, Tessan focused on ensuring the travel adapter can output as much power as possible.

More than its size, the Tessan Voyager 205’s heft might catch you by surprise. It weighs 11.5 ounces (326 grams), making it noticeably heavier than most travel adapters. However, that extra weight becomes easier to justify when you consider how many chargers the Tessan replaces.

In practice, it means carrying one device instead of several power bricks and adapters. Plus, having one less gadget to manage while traveling is always a welcome trade-off.

Made from flame-resistant polycarbonate, the Voyager feels sturdy in hand and not at all flimsy. The three plugs — EU, UK, and US/JP/Australia — slide out smoothly using the dedicated orange sliders on the left side. (Only one plug can be extended at a time, which prevents accidental use of multiple plugs simultaneously.)

Unlike Tessan’s 100W power adapter, the 205W model features an understated design. The sides have a subtle topographic pattern that, along with small orange accents on certain elements, adds enough contrast to keep the design visually interesting.

Tessan also includes two 10A fuses. So, if one ever trips, you can easily remove and replace it with the spare yourself. This small measure can keep you from becoming stranded without a working travel adapter-cum-charger on your trips.

Of the seven USB ports, three USB-C ports are located on the front, just above the power socket. The remaining ports — including one USB-A — sit at the bottom of the charger and face downward.

Bigger, and heavier, than usual

The Tessan Voyage 205W sagging
Due to its weight and size, the Voyager may sag when used with some power sockets.

There are two issues with the Voyager’s design. First, compared to most travel adapters, it is slightly longer and wider. In some cases, this can cause the adapter to block a nearby switch or prevent it from fitting properly into certain power sockets.

Second, the travel adapter works best in portrait orientation. Because of its weight, using it horizontally can cause it to sag from the socket, especially when multiple USB-C cables are plugged in.

Another important thing to note: The Tessan Voyager does not function as a voltage converter. Tessan recommends only plugging in devices that support 100-250V dual-voltage support. So, some single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners or curlers, might not work with it.

Power output

With a combined power output of 205W, the Tessan Voyager 205 will effectively replace a multiport charger. The front three USB-C ports share 45W of power, with the one in orange (C4) capable of putting out 45W when used individually.

The C1 port at the bottom can push 140W, enough to fast charge even the latest M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pros.

Tessan says you can fast charge two laptops at once, but the second device will only get 45W of power. Technically, that’s not fast enough to fast charge recent MacBooks.

Still, you can easily top up your MacBook, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch simultaneously at nearly their full speed directly from the Voyager. And you’ll still have more power to share with other low-power accessories.

Total DC Output: 205W

Tessan does label the different USB-C and USB-A ports on the Voyager 205, which helps when you’re plugging in multiple devices. However, it doesn’t clearly indicate the maximum power output for each port next to those labels.

The detailed specs are printed on the back of the adapter near the sliding plug mechanism, but once the adapter is plugged into a wall socket, that area is impossible to see.

Realistically, no one is going to memorize the power limits of seven USB ports, which makes it harder than it should be to figure out which port to use for high-power devices like laptops.

While I can remember to plug my MacBook Pro into the Tessan Voyager 205’s C4 port for charging, it’s much harder to keep track of the maximum power output of the other ports.

There’s one downside to the Voyager 205 pushing out so much power. It can get hot when fast charging multiple devices simultaneously. That’s not unusual, as most high-output multi-port USB-C chargers also run warm under heavy load.

Still, if you live in particularly warm climates, it’s something worth keeping in mind.

Tessan Voyager 205 review: Final thoughts

The Tessan Voyager 205 isn’t perfect, but it gets the fundamentals right. Its high 205W output, wide port selection and built-in travel plugs make it a practical all-in-one charging solution for travelers carrying multiple devices.

My main gripe is with the design. Because of its slightly larger than usual dimensions, there’s always a possibility of running into compatibility problems with various wall sockets. At the same time, it’s difficult to imagine how Tessan could make the adapter smaller without sacrificing its high power output or number of ports.

It also works best when used in a portrait orientation. Because of its weight, using it horizontally can cause the adapter to sag slightly from the socket, especially when multiple USB-C cables are plugged in.

While this doesn’t affect charging performance, it’s something to keep in mind when using it in tighter spaces or older wall outlets.

Still, as someone looking to reduce the number of chargers I carry, the Tessan Voyager 205 has become the primary travel adapter/charger in my bag. I still keep a spare charger just in case the Tessan fails to fit in an oddly placed socket.

Pricing

The Tessan Voyager 205 retails for $119. Considering its specifications and 205W total output, that’s a very competitive price for a travel adapter that can effectively replace multiple charging bricks.
